My puppy is teething.  Any suggestins for things I can make for her to chew on, or recommended toys I should look for.

Each dog's toy preference is different, but here are some toys I would recommend for puppies...

- Nylabone Puppy Fish
- Nylabone Puppy Teething Keys
- Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit

I have fostered many different types of puppies and had a lot of success with Nylabone products.  However, inevitably, puppies will choose your furniture over an approved puppy toy 9 times out of 10.  Just be patient, and replace the expensive piece of furniture with the $5 puppy toy time and time again praising them each time they chew the appropriate "toy" and they'll get the hint... eventually. :)

when my dogs were puppies they loved the puppy Kong.  they make it so its softer for puppies but still nearly indestructable.

TWO of my favorites are

1. A smoked beef knuckle bone or similar...it doesn't contain copious amounts of food, but it smells so good and meaty that they will chew on it for hours...IT IS THE "EVERLASTING GOBSTOPPER" of CHEW TOYS...
when your dog stops eating it, stick it in the freezer for later.

2. Bully Sticks are long brown sticks that the dog chews on and they also take a long time for the dog to get through. They are available at many petstores..sometimes they are called 'pizzle' sticks....[don't ask what they are]

The goal with a chew toy is LONGEVITY and RELIABILITY.  THe chew toy should be an absolute ACE IN THE HOLE as compared to WOOD, RUGS or SHOES, which means it probably should be smelly and edible [that's what the DOG wants--they resort to shoes etc, when there isn't a better option nearby]
Your dog MAY chew on other things, but they aren't "ringers" for his attention like meaty chew bones and sticks.

Denise,

I have to disagree with you on any smoked bone product.  These bones are cooked.  They absolutely can shard and can lodge inbetween teeth and gums.  I'd rather see the puppy gnaw on a real raw marrow bone - at least 2x the size of the pup's jaw.
