OK, i hope someone can answer this question because I don't know what i'm doing wrong.  I have an 12 week old puppy and she is peeing in the crate.  I condensed the size of the crate down already -- and she peed in it AFTER she peed outside.  I didnt think dogs went in their crate - i thought people said that was instinct or something??

help!

No worries.  This is quite common.  I wish there was a magic cure such as just simple crating or whatnot to potty train puppies, but it's not always that easy.  Make sure to take puppy outside a LOT (at least every two hours) and use immediate praise and/or yummy treats as soon as puppy goes potty in the right place.  Make sure the treats are small enough so they don't fill the pup up, but they also have to be yummy enough to "count" as a reward for your pup.  Most pet stores sell tiny training treats.  Here are some options...

  • Zen Puppy Treats (my personal favorite... yummy and they're healthy!
  • Authority Liver Treats
  • Bil-Jac Liver Treats
  • Charlee Bear Treats
  •
  • Also make sure you're cleaning up after puppy with a cleaner specially formulated for pet accidents.  I highly recommend Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover. The Power Sprayer they offer is especially great for carpets since it shoots the formula deep down where the "mess" is.
  • Raising a puppy is not easy so I commend you for taking the plunge into puppyhood!  Keep remembering... she's ONLY 12 weeks old... some pups don't get it for many many more months.  With a little time and patience I'm sure she'll start to learn.  Good luck!

    A quick addition....

    Try rationing her water back.
Only offer her water every 3-4 hours, unless you live in a very hot climate.
Or at least take the water away 2hours before putting her in the crate.
HOw long are you leaving her in the crate. A 12 wk old pup cannot usually stay in a crate without peeing for 8 hours a day...possibly if it's overnight..but probably not during the work day.

Also reduce the bedding down or take it away entirely for the time being.

    Good Luck
