To purchase or not to purchase additional dog

We have a 12 year old lab in great shape. But my husband knows I am going to be devastated when we eventually lose this dog so he wonders if we should add a puppy lab now.  But this older lab and I are joined at the hip and I wonder if this would cause stress on this dog or would it be a good experience for him to have another dog in the home.  Your thoughts please?

This is exactly what my mom did when I was younger and it worked out for us.  I think that adding a dog is a good idea as long as your older dog gets along which means you might have to take him with you to check out which dog he gets along with because you are not replacing him just adding a new addition to the family.  Make sure that if you make a choice he is involved so there will be less problems.  I hope this helps
