Just got a female 3 mo Mini Schnauzer

Hello everyone,

After much reading, research and discussion my husband and I came to the conclusion and purchased a miniature schnauzer that has APR (American Purebred Registry) papers. I am still learning about this type of registration however something I have discovered is that the breed is recognized to be just as good as one with AKC papers.

We've already been to the vet and she's in good health, getting over a cold actually so she's taking an antibiotic at the moment. She just had her last round of shots with the rabies and so forth and she got her shot tag to put onto the collar. We picked up a pink collar with a heart and an ID on it so that will actually look cute. Eventually I'll have a photo to post of it. :) The vet is quite happy though with how she's doing otherwise so that's a good thing.

She has tons of energy which is good and today I've noticed she's been going into her crate willingly. I have it open and sitting in the living room, she's been walking into it.What does confuses me is crate training. I have read so much and everything seems to be running together at this point.

Another issue that is still in question is feeding times because of scheduling. My husband works at night and that throws everything out of whack. If anyone has any ideas on how this can be handled to better the situation I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm sure a lot of it is due to the fact I'm overwhelmed at the moment and things will get easier. ha ha ha! Looking forward to chatting with others as this is the first pure bred I've had.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

* Something that I have been experiencing.. I feed the cats and her at the same time but when I do it, she still wants what they have. Now I realize she was in a kennel (or pet store) and was fed with other animals so may have had to fight for food perhaps. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with this?

Wow - that's great that your pup wants to spend time in their crate -- you want them to feel happy, content and safe there.  so, that's not a problem at all.

As for the food,  you might want to separate them when you feed?  I know my dog would try and get any kinda food possible if it was on the floor -- dog, cat, people -- whatever it is!

Im so excited for you! Getting a new puppy is wonderful but can be overwhelming as well.

One suggestion I have is feeding her in her crate so she can't get to the cat's food. You have to realize that whether she was raised in a pet store or individually dogs are scavangers and are always looking for resources. I know my dog is always looking for food even on a full stomach.

Having a food motivated dog is every dog trainers dream since it makes the training so much easier. Use her food motivation to your advantage especially during crate training. If you feed her in the crate you are building crate value which will result in your dog WANTING to be in her crate even more. Shewill associate good things with her crate and will be less likely to bark or whine in there.

Second, puppies do best in a routine so figure out a time that works best to feed her. Puppies should probably be fed three times a day so maybe morning, lunch and afternoon.

 Hope this helps!
