I am doing my friend a favor and dog sitting their 11 month old puppy -- but once they left I found out how POORLY trained this puppy is!  I know I should have asked first, so I take that responsibility -- but what do i do about this?

It's a cocker spaniel, and he's pretty smart -- and he's responding to me teaching him.  but the big thing is the wee wee pads -- he was supposedly wee wee pad trained -- but not so.  He shreds the wee wee pads, poops on our carpet.  I took matters into my own hands, and am now crate training and taking him outside -- but I'm SO angry.  Anyway - am i doing the right thing?  I have a yard and they live in an apartment but i really just want to make it thru the week
