Best way to clean ears?

What's the best way to clean out your dogs ears?  My dog has longish ears, and I've always just used a warm wash cloth, but then today in the store I saw some droplets that you can buy.  Has anyone used?  Are they safe?

I have this ear cleaning solution, which my vet gave to me. It was expensive(18.50 for 18oz), but you could find something similar with alcohol in it, which will kill bacteria as well. A warm washcloth should work fine. the ears are sensitive, so make sure not to drip too much water in the ear.

I was getting some solution from my vet also, until they told me that half vinegar and half water was just as good. The vinegar is not as drying as alcohol. My lab is prone to yeast infections in her ears, since they hang down and air doesn't circulate in them as good. She's also blind and doesn't run 90-to-nothing like she used to. Also, they told me to give her a cup of active yogurt a day or every other day, to help naturally combat the yeast. She's a little over 100 pounds, so the yogurt dose would vary with the dog's size. Since I've done this she hasn't had another ear infection yet.

FancyThatPets is very correct in recommending a water/vinegar solution.  I think though, that 50/50 is really too strong, though it may work well for her dog.  I've always used a 1 part apple cider vinegar to 9 part water solution.  This keeps a mildly acidic environment in the ear, which is the ear's natural PH.  I'm a Certified Master Groomer, and I've also groomed in vet clinics.

If you suspect a yeast infection (moist brown cruddy discharge, not granules) you can also use women's yeast infection medication.  They use the same ingredients as veterinary prescriptions.  Use daily for 7 days.

Good Luck!
