Using a shock collar or vibrating collar to stop my dog from rading the litter box?

Hello all -

I have an almost 3 year old doxie who has recently learned the litterbox is a great place for a midnight snack.  He is the same size as my roommates cat which makes keeping the box in an area only the cat can fit through fairly impossible.  Also, the cat refuses to use his literbox if it is raised or in any awkward place.  Soo the box has to be on the floor right at salad bar level for my dog.

My dad thought maybe one way to deter him from the box could be to use a vibrating collar to startle him into not entering that portion of the room the litter box is in.  What thoughts do you all have on this?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Jeff

dear jeff:
please don't use a shock collar!!  did you see the other message board entry about someone's neighbor using it on a 5 lb dog and how horrible the pain must have been for the small dog?  i can't see how a shock collar can be justified nor will help the problem, only to traumatize and damage your dog.  there are pet supply places (like fosters and smith online catalog) that have products for just this thing. i think one of the products is sprayed on the food so that it isn't palatable for the dog eating the resulting poop.  dachsunds are apparently known for eating poop, so maybe you can go on a website for dachsunds that addresses this issue. good luck but no shock!

My roommate's dog used to eat its own poop and the vet recommended putting msg in her food. Apparently it makes the poo not taste good. Perhaps you can feed it to the cat? it is sold in the store in spice section, called "Accent".
