Please Help

I have a german shepard and a schnauzer. willow the german shepard likes to go in the backyard and hunt animals like rabbits and birds. She almost killed a rabbit and she killed a bird, now that the rabbits and birds no longer come in our backyard she now has taken to hunting our schnauzer sam. She has injured sam's ear during an attack and now he is afraid to go outside. I have tried putting them out seperately which has worked but how long can I keep doing that. Willow's previous owners kept her in a cage and she was never socialized with other dogs. I want to keep both my dogs but I can no longer live like this. I have tried grabbing her during an attack to get her attention but I am afraid that she will bite me. How can I get control of willow before its too late for sam.

Hi, I'm a dog trainer and sounds like the dogs run the house. You need to learn to be the leader of the pack. The GSD has a prey drive that needs to be delt with. You need to walk them. That is a control walk. Walk them together under control. Watch Ceaser. Hope you get control soon.

I agree with the walking.... but to start with, I would recomend walking the GSD by herself at least till you can confidently control her, then add the other one. If you are not confident, the GSD will sense it and take control. I have a 21 month old GSD and I have to be strong (as in a confident leader) with her. The one time I wasnt, she took me for a walk and was just wild. Since then, I have trusted her mor around other animals and found that by doing so, my confidence grew and she became more willing to be a follower to me. Also, keep in mind, a tired dog is a good dog. She needs to be walked in the mornings, and when you get home from work (if you work, I myself do not). By walk, I mean more than 2 or 10 minutes. Her walks should be 30-45 minutes long. Even a good run would help for part of that. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at elfwolfe1@yahoo.com, and congrats on your GSD. :-)

Get obedience training ASAP!  I have a GSD with extremely high prey/hunt drives. This is a working breed that needs to be worked.
