I have a 1 year old lab/golden mix and a 4 month old cockapoo.  We are not outside alot (live in an apt) except for walks and some playtime down my mothers home where they can run.  Even at home they rarely go out on the rather large balcony even though it is available to them at all times.  My question is.....is heartworm prevention a necessity for my pups?  Would K-9 Advantix work just as well with repelling mosquito's if they ever come in contact with them?

 Are there "pros" and "cons" to this "preventitive" medication.  I am not one to take medications myself and I dont want to put anything into my pups that may potentially harm them in the long run if it is not needed!
