My puppy barks and screams in her crate
06-26-2007, 6:57 AM 1376

I have a 4 month old Pomeranian Puppy. Despite the normal puppy hardships such as housebreaking, mouthing, etc I am having a very difficult time with the crate.   If food is involved she will go in the crate no problem, and I am being consistant about feeding her meals in the crate.   My biggest problem is the mornings and when I am home.   The puppy naturally wakes up at 5:30AM (way earlier than my alarm is set) and once she is awake she will just bark, scream, and cry in her crate all morning.  Now I have been told by trainers not to immediately run to the crate when she makes noise, but she won't stop.  This morning she barked for an hour straight.   How do I fix this?????  any suggestions are welcome....thanks!

Crate training I think is harder on us than the dog.  Emotionally that is.  So when she wakes in the morning do you take her out and then put her back in for short times.  My dog never did well in her crate, during the training stage, but it's her place she goes when she wants to nap and have quiet time.  I also have a crate at work and she goes right in when she wants to lay down and sleep.

Sounds like you are still at the early stages.  My puppy at 4 months was still peeing up a storm and refused to eat in her crate, so sounds like you are doing a great job!  I wouldn't change her crate or make it bigger because it sounds like she just has anxiety and wants to be with you.  My dog, she's 2 1/2 now, wasn't totally pooty trained till 6 months.  Oh how that was nerve racking.  Sounds like you're doing everything right though.

GET THEE TO A PET STORE! and get yourself a KONG toy, and/or a hollow bone and start stuffin it! your dog needs awesomely rockin chew toys filled or smeared with smelly goodies to help distract her away from feeling alone and yucky in the crate.

Check out the training articles here in the PUPPIES section of the training info.

I've found MOST dogs can be quietly nicely by a kong filled with wet dog food, or smeared and frozen cream cheese.

you'll have to do this A LOT in the beginning, and also scatter your dogs food in the crate to get him more involved in LIKING it..instead of avoiding it.

It's worth the effort to get more control now, rather than waiting or giving up!

good luck.

What if Kongs (or other hollow bones) stuffed with treats don't work?  I have 2 siberian huskies; one is 3 yrs old and the puppy is about 8-9 weeks.  My older dog is crate trained and looooves his crate.  My puppy...not so much. She too is a five-alarm wailer (and my neighbors are WAY too nice to complain, but I know it irks them as they have commented how "quiet" my older dog is).

It took my older husky about 3 days to acclimate to his crate which I'm beginning to think is an abnormally awesome record.  My puppy is having a very difficult time--I've been feeding her in there for every meal and giving her special toys when she's in.  Unfortunately, the minute I leave the room (or even go into the closet), she will bust out a high-pitched scream like a seasoned Italian opera singer followed by a series of growls, even when there's a Kong filled with peanut butter and kibble under her nose.  Even when my older dog is in his crate and in the room with her, she'll still do her best imitation of a yowling cat.

I've tried all kinds of things to quiet her down: sheet over the crate (they both have the hard plastic crates, not the wires), special crate-designated toys and treats, hot water bottle, a ticking clock, small radio...even when I am in bed and reading out loud to her, she screams. I put her in the crate with my older dog to see if that would help, and it was no good. Siiiigh.

Help!
