Can sheep killing dogs be changed by mixing with sheep?

We have 3 boxers, 2 females 2yrs, 1 male 1yr. We live in Mexico and share a beach and hillside with a local who has a herd of 100+ free roaming sheep. While we were on holiday our 3 boxer dogs started to kill the sheep! When we got home the male brought me a day old lamb as a present. Still alive & unharmed. But they have been seen killing. We have been advised by the other local sheep owners that we should buy a sheep & keep it in the garden in a pen so the dogs become accustomed to it & will loose their desire to kill. This worked for a sheep killer that we rescued last year.

Or Dog Muzzels? Or shock collars?

Our dogs play on the beach & swim in the sea. We have no problems with them with children or adults. Our dogs were happy well behaved and had no problems with livestock until now. We are building a 3m wall but they need to exercise & to go out and protect our kids.

You are lucky the dogs have not been shot by the sheep owners! If you were in TX they would already be dead. Letting dogs roam free is NEVER a good thing!

It has been my observation that once this begins it does not end. Maybe obedience train the dogs to stay in a specific area if you are determined to let them roam free....will take a shock collar at this point, I speculate.

Sheep in a pen is not going to help, in my opinion, and there will come the day when one or more sheep get out.

Keep your dogs (and the sheep) safe. Keep them confined.

I agree with you. We had goats when I was a child and when we were away a dog pack in the neighborhood attacked the herd and our pet dog joined in the fun. My father shot into the pack with his shotgun loaded with birdshot causing them to run away. He called our little dog to come to him and he didn't respond. Daddy shot at him and he yelped but kept running. We were afraid we had killed him because of Dad's anger at his refusal to follow his orders but the next morning we found him on the back porch in his bed. The only real damage we found was a piece of shot in his nose which remained there as long as he lived. We never had any more trouble with dogs getting in the goats, but that was a little harsh and would not be legal in this day. That was about 55 years ago. I was about 8 or 10 years old and I will be 65, dob is 9/29/43. Good luck with your problem. Your dog bringing you a baby indicates that it was a game to them as much as anything. Ellen
