Howling in the Crate-Help!!

Hello,

I adopted a lab from Lab Rescue about 5 weeks ago. Since Lab Rescue didnt have much information on Jackson we decided to crate him during the day while we are at work. I put him in the crate for 4 hours in the am and come home for lunch, then i put him back in for 4 more hours. At first he was barking nonstop, now he has graduated to a howl. I live in a condo, fortunately my neighbors have been patient, but he's not getting any better. My neighbors say he howls all day while we are gone. Does anyone have any recommendations? We really need help, this is our first dog.

 Thanks So Much!

A couple of things to try...  Stuff a Kong with a combination of peanut butter and treats, or use another toy designed to hold (and slowly) dispense treats as the dog minipulates the toy.  The crate is the only place the dog gets this toy.  Also, try to cover the crate with a sheet to stop visual stimulation.

 Good Luck!

What is the dog's behavior if you don't crate him? How old is the dog?

How much excerse and attention does the dog get when he is not in the crate?

I personally have never crated a dog. Just for transport. I have house rules. I teach them to the dog....and if they want the "denning" experience they are free to create their den wherever they like. My one dog sleeps under the bed or in the closet.
