I just got my puppy last week at the shelter. She is estimated to be about 10 weeks old. They sent me home with a bag of Science Diet. I was looking at Purina One for puppies as I'm going to need to purchase food here soon. Is this a good puppy food? The vet is coming in 1 1/2 weeks to follow up on her next vaccinations and I will ask him his opinion in the matter too.
I had 2 chows (1 was chow/golden) that have lifespans of 11 to 13 years. I lost both this year, one in February and one just this past Christmas Day. I had both since they were puppies. The full blood chow lived to be 15 yrs. and the chow/golden lived to be 17 yrs. I really didn't do any special diets and they did get table scraps included with their meals when we had leftovers. I was particular about bones of course and they got plenty of exercise and love.
I don't feel I'm an expert on diet for my dogs, but my last two certainly lived a much longer life than the expectancy. I think table scraps of certain types do not hinder a dog's health, but with the excess fats the go with it, exercise is a very important part of the life.
Anyway, back to the puppy food....if anyone has heard anything bad about purina one for puppies, please let me know. We have just had a recent scare with contaminated dog foods and my mother in law lost her dog to this contamination. I worry since then about the same thing in various foods. Please let me know if there is something I should be aware of at present.
Thank You,
Shelly
